$5,000 – $14,000
Estimated all-in cost. Timeline: 30–90 days from application to certificate of completion.
Tank + gravity drainfield. Cheapest if your perc rate and water table allow it.
What drives the cost
- Soil and water table. Tight clay or shallow groundwater pushes you from a conventional drainfield to a mound, ATU, or sand filter — often doubling the install bill.
- Lot size and slope. Tight lots need pressure dosing or drip; steep lots need pumps and pretreatment.
- Local rules. Some counties require a licensed soil scientist or PE stamp; others let a homeowner pull the permit. Local health dept issues improvement permit + COC.
- Tank and material. Concrete is cheapest in most regions; fiberglass and plastic dominate where access is hard.
- Well depth. National median is roughly $40–$80 per foot of drilled well, plus pump and pressure tank.
